Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her grandmother Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught her to say something through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has been for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the trash belonging to one of juries. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
